DIY Taco Seasoning

Jump to Recipe

One of the biggest problems today is prepackaged seasonings, dressings, gravies and more. Whether it’s liquid or powder they are LOADED with chemicals, additives, and if not that – sodium (and it’s not the kind you want – because certain sodium is GOOD).

One of our favorite meals is a taco bowl. On occasion we use a grain free shell, but typically we do a rice base and everything else on a taco piled on top. Our meat needs flavor too. The problem with typical taco seasonings out there are the additives. They are food allergens for many and they do not even realize it!

Here is one example of a very popular brand (it doesn’t really matter the brand though if you are buying pre-mixed this is pretty standard):

What is the problem with this label?

Corn Starch – highly GMO and corn and corn products are HUGE food irritants for all I people I see in practice today. Once removed they feel loads better and many health problems fade away. It’s also highly sugar spiking. Corn and related products cause imbalance in sugar regulation.

Maltodextrin – this is SUGAR again for your body. This altered sugar is another HUGE irritant for people in my practice.

Vegetable Oil and Soybean Oil – highly processed and HIGHLY inflammatory. Again HUGE causes and irritants today for digestive dysfunction, along with systemic inflammation, diabetes, heart disease and more.

Citric Acid – the source is typically corn (see above for why that’s bad). Added citric acid is also commonly seen as an irritant for many – and especially with things like skin issues in rosacea and eczema etc.

Sugar – we don’t need more sugar.

Natural Flavor – this is not “natural” – this is done by pulling a flavor from nature, literally in a lab, altering it and re-injecting it back into the mix for MORE flavor because the product was STRIPPED of any real flavor it had in processing.

The bolded items above are THE REASON you should be skipping these types of packaged products.

Here is one more very popular brand available:

This one even tells you it has a MODIFIED corn starch (GMO).

Some off brands even have MSG in them (like go to your local dollar style store and buy them). The popular main brands today have mostly pulled out MSG from products. MSG can be found naturally in foods, but what we are talking about here is as a food additive and altered and that is where things go wrong and it becomes an irritant and allergic response item for many people.

What can you do instead?

Funny enough it’s NOT complicated to make your own taco seasoning from organic spices. As long as you KNOW the spice you are using is organic and doesn’t have any other ingredients in it – you are ready to roll. There are LOADS of variations of taco seasoning out there for recipes. If this one doesn’t appeal to you or has too much zing, grab another.

Most importantly – choose organic, single ingredient spices to create this blend. We love this blend because it gives some kick, and it lasts for as many recipes as you need because you can create the measurement based on the “parts listed.” We make ours in tablespoons as 1 part. This creates a small container of mixed spice to be used over a period of time. As long as it’s stored in a small ball jar sealed tightly with your other herbs you are good to go for storage. Just like your dried herbs from the store.
